STATEMENT FROM TIME TO SUCCEED COALITION CO-CHAIR CHRIS GABRIELI ON CALIFORNIA PROPOSAL TO CUT SCHOOL YEAR
“Earlier this week, news reports indicated that Governor Brown proposed giving California’s public schools the option to cut as much as one month from the school calendar due to the state’s ongoing budget crisis. Students in California and across the U.S. – particularly those in high-poverty schools – need to spend more time in school, not less. Without enough time in their school calendar, teachers are unable to ensure students learn the full curriculum, individualize their instruction, and use data to inform their teaching, all of which is essential to helping all students achieve to high levels.
“Nearly 70 schools in California have joined a growing movement across the country by expanding their school schedules. They are choosing schedules that work for students, not budget fights. While we understand these budget challenges are real, it would be a step in the wrong direction to allow school districts to cut 15 days from the schedule. We encourage California to find another way to address its serious budget challenges.”
