Last week at the Grad Nation Summit, America’s Promise released a video with General Colin Powell explaining the benefits of expanded learning time and opportunities for students. The video shows three communities with three different approaches for expanding learning time:
• Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School in Boston, Massachusetts through expanding the school day and year;
• Bell High School in Bell, California through the after school program, Beyond the Bell;
• Pace Creek Elementary school in Clay County, Kentucky through the summer learning program, “Camp Adventure.”
Watch the video and see the possibilities of expanded learning time!
Grad Nation is a movement of individuals, organizations, and communities focused on ending the high school dropout crisis, with the goal of a nationwide 90 percent high school graduation rate by 2020. The good news is that graduation rates have increased 6.5 percentage points since 2001 to 78.2 percent, helped by innovative approaches to the school day and year and increased opportunities throughout the day and year.
