STATEMENT FROM TIME TO SUCCEED CO-CHAIR CHRIS GABRIELI ON $20 MILLION NEW YORK INITIATIVE TO EXPAND STUDENT LEARNING TIME IN STATE BUDGET
“We applaud Governor Andrew Cuomo and leaders in the Legislature for putting New York at the forefront of the movement to rethink and redesign the education students need in today’s global economy. By including $20 million in funding for expanded learning time in the budget, New York becomes the largest statewide initiative in the country investing in this proven method of expanding student learning time.
The program as outlined in the budget is smart, flexible, and bold and will give schools, teachers, and kids the time they need to succeed in the 21st Century. It’s smart to learn from the more than 1,000 pioneering schools in New York, Massachusetts and across the country that already successfully expand learning time for their students. It’s flexible because it embraces local choice and empowers schools, teachers, and communities to expand time when and how it works best for them. And it’s bold because it commits the state of New York and its resources to ensuring that children across the state have the school learning time they need to succeed by supporting districts willing and able to do it well.
New York is already home to nearly 60 expanded-time schools that have already expanded their school schedules beyond the traditional 6.5-hour 180-day school calendar.
The Time to Succeed Coalition (TSC) includes over a hundred leaders from education, philanthropy, government, business, labor, civil rights, and academia, in addition to thousands of grassroots members, all united in the belief that expanding school schedules to include more and better learning time is a critical and well-proven measure. Together, we look forward to supporting school leaders across New York as they begin the planning process for expanded learning time in the months ahead.”
