STATEMENT FROM TIME TO SUCCEED NATIONAL DIRECTOR BLAIR BROWN ON
ESTABLISHMENT OF EXPANDED LEARNING COUNCIL
(Boston, MA) “We applaud Governor Perry and legislative leaders in Texas for establishing an Expanded Learning Opportunities Council to study and make recommendations about expanded learning time for public school students in Texas, which Governor Perry signed into law. We commend Senator Royce (D-Dallas) and Representatives Mark Strama (D-Austin), Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston), and Mike Villarreal (D-San Antonio) for their continued leadership on this issue.
Texas is already home to pioneers in the movement to expand learning time, including both district and charter school models. The creation of this council is a further step towards ensuring that the state has the strategic framework in place to ensure that all Texas children, particularly those in communities of concentrated poverty, have the time in school they need to succeed in college, workforce and beyond.”

The Time to Succeed Coalition (TSC) is a diverse coalition of Americans committed to improving our public schools by expanding learning time for students who need it most—those disadvantaged by poverty. Led by the Ford Foundation and the National Center on Time & Learning, TSC is building the movement to expand learning time and to help communities overcome barriers to change. It is time to succeed – and with expanded learning time, we will succeed.
