A recap of the week’s expanding learning time (ELT) news:
Windham, CT, administrators, teachers, and parents are all talking about learning time. Two schools in that community are taking part in a planning process to add time to the school day and/or year through the TIME Collaborative (a 5-state initiative led by the National Center on Time & Learning and the Ford Foundation). By engaging in the planning process, the teams are able to design new school days to meet the needs of individual students.
Citizen Schools Texas recently raised $116,000 to support their ELT programs in the Lone Star State, and in particular, their partnership with Houston Independent School District. Citizen Schools CEO Eric Schwarz is a TSC Signatory.
The Houston Independent School District won the 2013 Broad Prize for Urban Education for the second time. The Broad Prize celebrates the nation’s large school districts that have made big gains in student achievement in recent years. Our congratulations go out to TSC Signatory HISD Superintendent Terry Grier and his team of administrators and teachers! (A note: TSC is supported by the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.)
Briana Tang, a high school student in NY, authored this op-ed about why she believes her community should consider ELT.
