Happy Friday and Happy Valentine ’s Day. Here is a recap of the week’s expanding learning time (ELT) news:
February is AmeriCorps month! If you are looking for a rewarding job teaching in an expanded learning time school apply for the Citizen Schools Teaching Fellowship.
Bay District, Florida’s s leaders are contemplating expanding the school day for the whole school district. “We know that additional time in instruction is good for kids… With [expanded learning time] being so successful [at Springfield Elementary School] what would it look like if we made this happen for all the schools?” said Denise Kelley, Director of Elementary Instruction.
A study on KIPP schools from What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) found that adding more time to the school day is a key strategy that is successful. Student achievement progress was found to be larger in KIPP schools that spent relatively more time on core academic activities, defined in the study as English language arts, math, science, and history.
In St. Joseph, MO, a new year will bring schedule changes for the St. Joseph School District. The changes include more snow days, removing half days and separating graduation dates between the high schools. Perhaps the biggest change will be longer school days which teachers are looking forward to.
