Schools in New York City are building in time for teachers to learn and collaborate from each other or to meet with parents. This change comes from the new NYC teachers’ contract. In order to make time for this change, the schools are rearranging the school schedule and reallocating time previously used to help struggling students.

Additional instruction time was added to Ionia Public Schools in Michigan. The reasons for adding 10 minutes into the school day, according to Ionia Public Schools Superintendent Pat Batista, are to provide intervention to high school students, help schedules and transportation align across the district and give teachers time to collaborate.

Men from the United Black Men of Queens County Inc. in Southeast Queens are petitioning for more class time. Patrick Jenkins, a lobbyist for the group, says, “We call on the mayor of the city of New York to make every school in southeast Queens an extended learning time school.”
