Happy Friday! Are you pumped for the Super Bowl this weekend? We’re based in Boston so most of our staff are rooting for the Patriots, except for a few outliers. So…go Pats!
Here’s what’s happening this week in the world of expanded learning time:
The longer school day for Boston schools won the final approval from the Boston School Committee. The plan to expand the day by 40 minutes in 60 schools passed by 5-to-1 vote, and came two weeks after the Boston Teachers Union membership overwhelmingly ratified the deal. It is now official!
The Atlantic highlighted the activity gap between students from low-and high-income families is growing. Access to after-school programs is growing more unequal, and that’s pushing disadvantaged kids further behind. By expanding time in school, we can help to bridge that “opportunity gap”.
Our friends at TASC just released a video that features administrators, teachers and sixth-graders at theSouth Bronx School of Applied Media talking about the benefits of expanded learning time. It’s a fun look at all the opportunities a longer day can provide!
